About Reiki

Reiki (pronounced “RAY-key”) is a form of complementary and alternative bodywork developed by Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui, in the earlier 20th C. The technique involves light touch as well as distance (hands-off) healing. Practitioners channel Reiki energy through their palms into a receiver with the intention of activating the body’s inherent intelligence, and to support the self-healing process.

What to Expect

Consultation

Patients go through a full history and consultation, addressing:

  • physical history
  • emotional concerns
  • lifestyle choices
  • diet
  • supplementation
  • medication
  • coordinating care

Before the session, patients are invited to have an intention for the work to use as a kind of compass setting for the treatment. This can be a specific concern, or it can simply be, “I’m open to whatever arises that requires my care right now.”

Treatment

Treatments are conducted one-on-one, fully clothed. They last 45-60 minutes (seated or lying down) and may include light touch or hands-off healing. For those unable to travel, Melissa offers distance Reiki sessions conducted over the phone. Experientially, distance treatments are no different from hands-on treatment.

Clients are encouraged to stay present with what arises in their body as Melissa channels energy through physical or emotional blocks. Patients may choose to participate in silence; however, Melissa encourages her clients to engage actively in the process through dialogue and mental/intentional exercises while on the table. She will talk to her patients about what blocks she sees in the body, and welcomes an open exchange in working through them.

Homeplay

Clients work with Melissa to brainstorm helpful and actionable self-care exercises as a way to integrate the emotional and mental shifts facilitated during treatment.

All patients will receive a basic treatment plan, including (1) suggested course of Reiki treatment; (2) targeted chakra self-care exercises; and (3) suggested referral(s).

Additionally, new patients may opt to receive a comprehensive treatment plan on their second visit, outlining objectives for:

  • Spiritual growth
  • Emotional support
  • Lifestyle choices
  • Dietary goals
  • Climate/exposure management
  • Exercise/self-care
  • Treatment
  • Referral
